Where sorrow breathes and hope lingers:

THORNS.

A sound library shaped by reverence and depth, THORNS carries an atmosphere of brokenness and beauty intertwined. Its tones are raw yet delicate—voices of bowed strings, winds, and textures that speak of longing, struggle, and surrender.

Each layer unfolds like a fragile thread of emotion: sorrow mingling with hope, silence woven with sound. The atmospheres do not seek to overwhelm but to draw the listener into stillness, reflection, and a sense of the unseen.

THORNS is not about grandeur or spectacle. It is about honesty—sounds that ache, breathe, and wait. Whether used in film, contemplation, or musical creation, it offers a palette that leans toward the inward journey: fragile but resolute, quiet yet stirring.

Crafted with care, THORNS invites you to create music that resonates beyond the surface—music that lingers, music that remembers.

Ever-changing Soundscapes

THORNS offers a 4-layer instrument with an intuitive XY pad, allowing sounds to move and blend with ease. Within it are carefully chosen sources that can be shaped into atmospheres of depth and stillness. Each layer may carry sorrowful tones or quiet hope, and together they form soundscapes that breathe and unfold. Rather than overwhelm, the instrument invites you to explore subtle detail, to create spaces that are contemplative, evocative, and enduring.

Fragile tones, eternal depth.

The sound world of THORNS is built from deeply expressive sources. Ancient voices are heard through the mournful breath of the duduk, carrying melodies that feel timeless. Bowed strings and raw scrapes speak of sorrow and human frailty, while low drones anchor the atmosphere with weight and gravity. The gentle cries of violas, blended with a soft choir, evoke mourning and reflection. Whispering winds and subtle atmospheric effects weave through these textures, shaping an ambience that is both fragile and profound.

From the Deepest Lows to the Fragile Highs.

The palette of THORNS spans a wide range of voices and colors. Deep foundations are found in double basses, cellos, and low drones, alongside powerful bends, hits, and blasts.

  • Pads and atmospheres rise from orchestral sources and carefully designed textures, while wood creaks and frame drums add sparse, organic accents.
  • Bow scrapes stretch into harmonics and vast bends, contrasted by the shimmer of cymbals, gongs, and swells.
  • Ancient breath returns in expressive duduk phrases and effects, joined by mournful viola textures, intimate choir arrangements, and fragments of David’s harp.
  • Flutes and ethnic winds bring whispers, sighs, and atonal cries—sometimes delicate, sometimes raw.
  • Completing the picture are bonus atmospheric effects, drones, and percussive details that enrich the whole, offering a collection that is as varied as it is heartfelt.

Cycle and Focus — Evolving Control.

With THORNS, a new dimension opens through the Multilayers system. Each of the four main layers can now hold up to eight sound sources, giving a palette of as many as thirty-two voices within a single patch.

Cycle Mode allows these sub-sources to shift over time or with each key press, creating evolving phrases and textures that never remain static. This brings movement, variety, and an organic sense of life to your atmospheres.

Focus Mode lets you single out one layer while preserving the blend of the others, so you can refine and shape details without losing the whole picture.

Together, these modes make it possible to build soundscapes that are both intricate and fluid—subtle changes, slow transformations, and moments of focus that let the music breathe naturally.

Imagine:

... holding a steady drone in Layer A, a foundation that grounds the atmosphere. Over it, Layer B brings shifting soundscapes, cycling gently to create a sense of movement and depth. In Layer C, whispers, distant winds, flutes, night calls, or subtle percussive textures rise and fall, in succession one ofter the other, weaving life into the background. Meanwhile, Layer D becomes your voice of choice—whether a sorrowful viola, a mourning choir, a timeless duduk phrase, or fragile effects—selecting which source to bring forward and when. Together they form a living soundscape: reverent, emotional, and stirring, awakening reflection, passion, and a deeper sense of awareness.

Flip the Script: Instant Reverse & Step Volume Control

Twist reality with the intuitive reverse patch, reversing each sample layer on the fly to uncover unexpected sonic textures. Sculpt rhythmic pulses and evolving dynamics with the per-layer step volume, adding intricate motion to your four-layered sound designs.
To fully leverage the inherent depth and complexity of these atmospheric sounds, they are designed to be played one note at a time. This approach unlocks the rich chordal textures embedded within each sample, providing a powerful and evocative foundation for your compositions with singular sonic gestures.
CPU on older systems: The instrument performs real-time crossfades for smooth transitions. On some older CPUs or specific audio interfaces, Kontakt’s CPU meter can appear elevated even at moderate voice counts. This is expected engine behavior and not a fault in the library. It is recommended to use this instruments in a more capable CPU System with audio buffer set to max 192/256 samples.
